Where the starting amounts come from

Verdeaux blends three sources, and every line tells you which one it used:

The Wedding Report — a licensed dataset of real wedding spending by zip code, year, and guest count, refreshed annually. It's a neutral data company, not a vendor marketplace.
Verdeaux's independent benchmarks — for items the Report doesn't itemize, we price from real vendor and retailer rates, and we correct for the inflation in marketplace cost guides. The Knot and Zola earn from the vendors they quote, so their "averages" tend to run high — where they run hot we trim to what couples actually pay, and where they undershoot we raise them.
Verdeaux's own modeling — the percentage of weddings that include each category, and the vendor floor (the minimum realistic service-tier price in your market), so your budget reflects what couples actually book.

As couples lock real contracts, we replace estimates with what your market actually pays.

What changes your numbers

Your details adjust the benchmarks for your specific wedding:

City — cost-of-living differential from BEA regional data (Manhattan ≈ +23%, Pittsburgh ≈ −7% vs. national). Set your ZIP in Wedding Details.
Guest count — scales the per-guest lines (catering, bar, cake, stationery, favors) to your count.
Meal style — sets catering per guest: plated ≈ $80, stations ≈ $58, buffet ≈ $50, cocktail reception ≈ $38, food truck ≈ $24. A cocktail reception is a real, lower-cost alternative — not just a smaller dinner.
Bar — open bar ≈ $28/guest, beer & wine ≈ $15, signature cocktails ≈ $18, cash bar ≈ a bartender fee, dry $0.
Wedding party + out-of-town guests — size the per-person lines (attire, hair & makeup) and event headcounts (rehearsal, welcome party), and the hotel block.
Formality — informs whether a full planner is recommended for your wedding.

Verdeaux uses magic-link sign-in — no password to remember, no password to leak. Every sign-in sends a one-time link to your email. Links expire after 60 minutes.
